Fun Pretzel Facts

At Bavarian Bier Cafe pretzels are made by German bakers using a traditional recipe and techniques to create these baked knots of doughy goodness.

Pretzels have been an integral part of German baking traditions for centuries, with the earliest recorded evidence of pretzels appearing in the crest of German bakers’ guilds in 1111.

In the late 18th Century, southern German and Swiss German immigrants introduced the pretzel to North America. These immigrants became known as the Pennsylvania Dutch and the pretzel’s popularity spread. National Pretzel Day has been celebrated in America each year since 2003 when Pennsylvania Governor Ed Rendell declared the ‘unofficial’ holiday to acknowledge the importance of the pretzel to the state’s history and economy.
